Why are my oranges turning green?
You may have noticed some of your Valencias looking a little green recently. Don't worry, they aren't underripe!
Actually, "regreening" late in the summer and fall is a perfectly normal effect of summer heat (last month's heat wave kicked off the regreening early, in fact). The color of the skin doesn't affect the flavor of the fruit in any way. The oranges just keep getting sweeter, even as they turn so green they look half-ripe.
Because "appearance is everything" in the supermarket, commercial packinghouses try to get a few more weeks of orange sales by gassing their fruit to turn it orange again. We (and now you!) know better -- it's the taste that matters! In fact, late-season Valencia oranges are worth more to commercial juicers, so when packinghouses stop selling to supermarkets, they sell to the juice market.
So, enjoy a glass of the world's best-tasting orange juice, fresh-squeezed from a nice green orange. Your taste buds will thank you!
